Members of the Knox County Christian Home School Association announce a workshop to assist area parents interested in home schooling their children in the fall. There is no charge for the meeting, “Home School 101.”

“Home School 101” will be held Monday, June 10 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the COTC downtown Mount Vernon campus. Veteran home schooling parents will explain the basics of home education, answer questions related to home schooling in Ohio, and present curriculum options for various ages. They will also introduce the many support groups available throughout Knox County for students, kindergarten through high school.

“As the school year ends, many parents are looking for a different kind of education for their children next fall,” said Melanie Hexter of Apple Valley, the organizer of the meeting. “We want parents to leave this workshop knowing that yes, they are more than capable of schooling their children at home, including high schoolers. We want to give them access to resources and support so they will be able to teach with excellence.”

Topics such as Ohio legal guidelines, learning styles, curriculum options, teaching multiple children, and student socialization will be presented. This is the seventh annual Home School 101 workshop. Childcare will not be provided and no RSVP is necessary.

Home education is a rapidly growing and successful educational option in Ohio and around the country. Parents are choosing home education due to its tutorial instruction and academic excellence, guided social interaction, freedom to teach spiritual content in the curriculum, and for students’ physical safety. An estimated 2.0 million children, grades kindergarten through high school, were being home educated in the U.S. during 2009 (National Home Education Research Institute website, www.nheri.org). Locally, over 160 families were members of the Knox County Christian Home School Association during 2012-2013.

Parents interested in attending Home School 101 or who have questions prior to the June 10th meeting may contact Matthew and Melanie Hexter at info@kcchsa.org.
